The current 'system' is supposed to be you play county for a season.
Top ten ranked players from each region at end of season go to England trials. Our region has West Berks, Berks, Hamps, Wilts, Bristol, and Somerset.
At England trials they do Swiss system ... play someone on same record ... 4(sometimes 5) losses you're out ... final few qualify.
I qualified two/three years ago ... was lucky enough to get a call up to the Europeans (they happened to be away - on Isle of Man though so hardly exotic!!). Depsite good record there never got a call up again as the worlds were at home that year and mysteriously people came from no where to play - wildcards are spread around like confetti.
Lee Brown-John qualified a year ago from Oxford ... never so much as got a text or phonecall despite people playing that year that hadn't qualified at all.
Sad to say but the English Blackball setup is ****e for International level - hence Englands poor performances over the years. We have 10 times the population of most of the other nations (bar France) that take part and we still get battered. Some very ordinary pool.
Pains me to say it but you want a decent and fair International setup ... go to World rules ... i certainly know i wouldn't stand a chance at that level.
Oh hang on ... you said you played with Malc .... you'll be fine then!!

The same thing happened to Sean Ling a couple of years ago
It does seem to be run very badly at England level. John's story is interesting with regard to playing in the Europeans then getting dropped for the Worlds at home.
You'd have thought Lee would have got at least a letter of apology giving the reasons why he wasn't picked, but nothing. Not a single piece of communication from this 'pseudo' National team.
That's probably the biggest stumbling block preventing Blackball (which most people think are the best rules set) from seriously challenging the EPA set-up.
At least we now have a professional and well-organised county team.
John did indeed get a sh*te deal after the Euros - fancy winning 67% on your debut and not being invited to the Worlds. They are silly for not snapping you up John.
Alex and I have been playing for 3 years now, and if we hadn't actively phoned up and asked if we were required before each tournament, we might well have ended up being ignored like BJ & John.
I recommend a pro-active appraoch - though it is a shame this seems to be necessary.
That said the ladies certainly seem to have got themselves more organised this year - I am optimistic of improvement from our side of the bench.

I have found by experience that some people on here like to use posts for other motives on here in the past so I stuck to the point and answered your questions.
Be morespecific in the question next time and you might get a more informative answer we haven't all got crystal balls you know.

I don't think there's a random way of trialing for Blackball or EPA. In order to be invited for the Blackball trials you need to finish in the top 10 of the region we are in for the relevant squad (i.e. Mens, Ladies or Youths) - at least I think it's top 10? I believe the Regional Manager (Marcus for us) also has a wildcard or two? - JFK will confirm?
I don't think there's any other way of getting an invite?
You need to finish in the top ten in the region, after all existing england players are removed from the list. Then you should get an invite, which you will be notified of through the managers normally.
For mens and ladies Ash and Jaz are correct - top ten finishers after currently England players are removed.
However, for youth the England trials are entirely OPEN. Anyone can go (as long as they satisfy the age requirements!!). We will be getting dates shortly hopefully for these - I'm sure Tim will certainly pass these on to you.
The 3 regional directors (our region is directed by Marcus Guise) and each county manager can wildcard one player for England trials. About 45-55 people attend trials for the men.
