Despite the fact that we are only just past half way in the first season of the Oxford Singles Pool League, I want to get preparation for the second season underway.
The committee has met to discuss possible changes for the second season. The outcome is thus:
Section One will remain as is, with 12 players entering with the entry fee set at £100, although there is scope to extend this section beyond 12 players if appropriate.
Sections Two and Three (and more if numbers allow) will remain as they are except that the entry fee will be the same for both (all) at probably £30-40.
The distribution of prize money will be set once the number of sections and players is finalised.
I am in discussions with Rileys to possibly extend the offer of free tables for matches beyond Section One, however if this is not possible then a discount card for every player in the league will be provided which will include very good discounts on food, drink and pool.
The committee proposes to enquire about extending the Ladies Section into it's second season with free tables provided by the A1 Pool Hall.
The rationale behind having one entry fee for the sections below Section One is to create a standardised format in which players move through promotion/relagation into a section suitable for their ability. The players in Sections Two and Three are mixed up in terms of ability which is due to the different entry fees splitting players rather than their ability.
Section One should be kept separate to offer the "elite" players a more challenging (and rewarding) competition.
I am setting the 31st October 2009 as the deadline for entries in the 2010/11 season.
I appreciate there are some players who won't want to commit until some of the issues have been decided (free tables and entry fee) but these will be sorted shortly.
Last year as the league was in it's infancy, players were assigned a section based on a first-come-first-served basis because of the unknown interest and the different entry fees.
Players wishing to enter Section One must be of a calibre that satisfies the committee.
Players wishing to enter one of the other sections will be ranked and placed in a section based on their playing ability. This should be a one-off exercise as promotion and relegation will provide suitable movement between sections for season three.
The deadline for entries this year will include a strict no-pay, no-play policy. I have been far too lax in the first season with people paying their entry fee.
Please text/call me on 07739016497 or email tom_williams78@hotmail.com to express you interest in entering the 2010/11 season.
Working on the expectation that there will be enough interest in the second season of the Oxford Singles Pool League, below is the pay out structure based on an entry fee of £100 for Section One and £30 for Sections Two to Four:
I have had some interest so far, but within reason the first 48 places are first-come-first-served. Once the places are filled I'll sort out who is in what section.
As before though, Section One places will be designated for the "elite" of Oxford's pool fraternity.
Beyond that I will rank players based on playing ability so they can be placed into their suitable section.
I know that some players may not be keen to commit to entering without knowing which section they will be going into, but you will be ranked fairly and your section will be appropriate to your ability. The main purpose of this league is to promote Oxford pool and the improvement of it's players so you won't be playing against unsuitable opposition.
The deadline remains 31st October 2009, but if I can get 48 entries in earlier then it helps me sort things out the administration and it also encourages a fifth section.
Most people who play in the Oxford pool leagues and/or visit the pool forum are aware of the Singles League but if you have pool colleagues who aren't aware of it's existance please feel free to pass on the news of the deadline for entries into the 2010/11 season.
I know there are probably a number of players from Abingdon, Wantage, Witney, Kidlington, Bicester etc who don't know about it.
Places are filling up, please let me know if you would like to enter.
To confirm the entry fee for Section One is £100 and this section will receive free tables for matches at Rileys.
The entry fee for the other sections will be £30. Players in all other sections will be able to claim 50% off table play for matches.
All players in all sections will be entitled to the discounts gained as part of the "Team Package". This includes 50% off table play at all times, 20% off all food and drink and free annual membership to Rileys Oxford.
Hopefully this will help those unsure of entering the 2010/11 season. The deadline for entries including payment remains at 31st October 2009.
The current number of entrants for the 2010/11 season stands at 40, three of whom have paid.
I'm looking to run five sections so am looking for another 20 players. There a large number of current Singles League players yet to confirm their interest so please do so soon to avoid disappointment, although if I get 72 players then there will be six sections.
Also, a note to those who have already "signed up", I need full payment before 31st October 2009. Failure to pay be this date will mean you can't enter and your place will go to someone else. Contact me to sort out paying, or wait until you next expect to see me. I am playing for the Rose Hill SC on Sundays, Whitehouse (Botley Road) on Mondays, Osney Arms on Tuesdays and Shelley Arms on Thursdays. However please don't leave entry fees behind the bar, or with someone else to pass on to me, make sure you give it to me personally!
To all of those who have expressed an interest to enter the 2010/11 season of the Oxford Singles Pool League, the deadline for payment of entry fees is Saturday 31st October. This is a strict deadline with no exceptions. Please get payment to me as soon as you can to avoid disappointment.
For those of you who don't see me on a regular basis, my pool calender up until the end of October is:
Tuesday 13th Oct - GWR
Thursday 15th Oct - White House
Sunday 18th Oct - Daytime I'll be playing County Pool in Hampshire, then at Rileys in the evening
Tuesday 20th Oct - Probably GWR
Sunday 25th Oct - Rose Hill SC
Monday 26th Oct - GWR
Thursday 29th Oct - Red Lion (Kidlington)
Saturday 31st Oct - Rileys all day for the Singles Series Tournament.
In addition my mobile is 07739016497 and email address is tom_williams78@hotmail.com. It is up to you to sort out getting payment to me, so get on with it!
I have 47 people interested in next season league. One more person makes a nice round 48 for four sections. Let me know if you're interesred.
So far only eight of the 47 have paid. There are just over 2 weeks remaining before the deadline for payment.
If some people haven't paid by then, and I decide to extend the payment deadline so that the league works, let us not have people moaning about people not paying on time. Everyone has the opportunity to pay on time now. 16 days should be enough for everyone to get their entry fee in.
The 31st October has been cleverly set for a Singles Series Tournament, so I will be at Rileys all day on that Saturday. As it happens to be the final day before the deadline it might suit a lot of people to pay that day. Cheques preferred on that day!
Section One: Adam Brown Andrew Gee Ash Fletcher Ben Scott Dave Crawford Jez Thompson John Kinsey John Street Lee Brown-John Peter de Banks Shaun Taylor Steve Doyle
Section Two: Graham Hornblow Keith Hollis Kenny Saunders Mark Cooper Mark Trafford Matty Hearne Paul Carter Phil Hearne Rob Wheeler Simon Anderson Steve Jordan Will Cooper
Section Three: Ash Street Craig Coles Hassan Ali James Watson Jaz Venning Mark Reynolds Mark Salter Nicki Kinsey Richard Lamburn Steve Joseph Terry Ambrose Tom Gaughan
I'll confirm this soon and will produce the fixture lists for matches commencing February 2010.
Note: Each of the three divisions are £30 entry fee so don't panic those who have moved up to Section One! (Adam and John, you're due a £70 refund)
Milhouse wrote:Very surprised that the majority of the division 1 players from this season are not re-entering Is this because of the change in money up for grabs ?
Had the same people from this season's section one entered for next season, their entry fee and pay out structure would have been the same as this year. But they didn't, so it's not.
