KEYS SAFELY THROUGH

Red Lion (Drayton) 4 - 8 Cross Keys B (extended score 5 - 10)

The Keys successfully negotiated a potential banana skin and avoiced a repeat of last years defeat to the Lion. The games were close but I think the scoreline was a fair one at the end of the day.

Definitely. Well played Peachcroft but the arguments about the rules, deliberate foul and threat to complain was unsportmanlike and spoilt the atmosphere of what was a good match.

I think that was Georges tactic to try to unsettle us as it was the only way they could possibly win but it didn't work. HA HA

Right hazel, firstly you need to learn not to take a Sunday night PUB pool league so seriously.  We may not know all of the exact rules word for word but it seems neither do all of your players seeing as the ref in your game against martin only called a deliberate foul after you said it was. Since when has the right to complain been unsportsman like? ok we may have been a little loud but we were trying to have a good night out!  At the end of the day you won so what is the problem???? and you say by unsettling you would be the only way we could beat you (maybe) but if you're the good player that people tell me you are, why not take a foul and two visits to beat martin and not call a deliberate foul on someone who isn't as sure of the rules as you are and in the same frame that you played a shot knowing full well that it would result in a foul (which apparently isn't deliberate enough for the rules)!??! and don't tell me if you were in the same snooker 5 times that you would fail to get within 6 inches of your ball in any of the attempts as one of your players did, which apparently doesn't constitute making a reasonable effort to hit his ball, see rule 17 below:

17. Loss of frame shots
A player who clearly and intentionally fails to attempt to play an 'on' ball OR deliberately plays a ball which is 'not on' will lose the frame.

but before you all get on your soap boxes just remember that even though we lost we still managed to enjoy our night and that winning isn't what really matters!!!

just wanted to put our pint of view across, take that how you will

I am that dissapointed by your attitude Hazel that I have bothered to come back here to this forum to say my two pence worth.

It is sad that a player of your years in the game still resort to such backwards double standards. It is the way your team played that was part of the reason I decided to back off from pool as a captain and now only play very occaisonally and only when out on a Sunday with the guys for a good laugh and a pint.

We had no intention of deliberately trying to heckle and if you get put off by us then you have a problem. Who are we to deprive you of your 2010 tee shirts if that is what gives you a kick.

Quite frankly I couldn't give too hoots us losing in the TKO at least we had fun and don't have a pool cue up our arse. If your style of playing is that then you are welcome to it.

Good luck for the rest of your season.

And no I am not bitter just sad that your team embody what is wrong with the way some teams approach this league.

Why shouldn't we take it seriously? It's a league = competition.

We may not know all of the exact rules word for word but it seems neither do all of your players seeing as the ref in your game against martin only called a deliberate foul after you said it was.

The ref is very shy and after the hassle he had about me playing a FOUL and George questioning his decision made him feel reluctant to call the LOSS OF FRAME FOUL by your player, he needed prompting.

Since when has the right to complain been unsportsman like?

You complain all you like but I know neither myself nor any of my team mates did anything wrong. It's not our fault if you don't know the rules. If you play any sport in a league you should at least know the rules.

ok we may have been a little loud but we were trying to have a good night out!

We also like a good night out, if we win it's a bonus. But George spoilt the atmosphere as he often does.

if you're the good player that people tell me you are, why not take a foul and two visits to beat martin and not call a deliberate foul on someone who isn't as sure of the rules as you are

Hey it's not my fault he doesn't know the rules. It wasn't a deliberate foul he committed but a LOSS OF FRAME FOUL as I stated on the night. He made no attempt to play his own ball and played straight into my ball.

and in the same frame that you played a shot knowing full well that it would result in a foul (which apparently isn't deliberate enough for the rules)

It's a shot that many players play - I hit my ball first and attempted a skill shot but unfortunately my ball didn't pot, just his ball which is just a foul.

and don't tell me if you were in the same snooker 5 times that you would fail to get within 6 inches of your ball in any of the attempts as one of your players did, which apparently doesn't constitute making a reasonable effort to hit his ball, see rule 17 below:

17. Loss of frame shots
A player who clearly and intentionally fails to attempt to play an 'on' ball OR deliberately plays a ball which is 'not on' will lose the frame.

I have total faith in my team and if our player didn't get out of the snooker I'm sure he made a good attempt. I can't personally recall this shot you're talking about, maybe I was outside having a fag.

but before you all get on your soap boxes just remember that even though we lost we still managed to enjoy our night and that winning isn't what really matters!!!

just wanted to put our pint of view across, take that how you will

Fair enough, you've said your piece and I've said mine. I'm sorry if I'm a competitive person and like to win but I like to win fairly and within the rules.

Maybe you are but I'm not surprised at all by Georges on the night. Our B team were also playing 2 tables away and heard your teams heckling. One of them is my sons best mate.

It is sad that a player of your years in the game still resort to such backwards double standards.

Please explain what you mean by this, I did nothing wrong as your player did.

It is the way your team played that was part of the reason I decided to back off from pool as a captain and now only play very occaisonally and only when out on a Sunday with the guys for a good laugh and a pint.

What do you mean by "how my team play" - we play to win fairly, what's wrong with that?
We had no intention of deliberately trying to heckle and if you get put off by us then you have a problem.

We don't get put off at all, just spoilt the atmosphere of a good night out. Even our B team heard you in their match.

Who are we to deprive you of your 2010 tee shirts if that is what gives you a kick.

I'm not captain anymore, our captain got the shirts for us but we're still proud to wear them - again is there anything wrong in that?
Quite frankly I couldn't give too hoots us losing in the TKO at least we had fun and don't have a pool cue up our arse. If your style of playing is that then you are welcome to it.

If my pool cue was up my arse I doubt I'd be able to play. lmao.gif

Good luck for the rest of your season.

Thank you for that, we'll do our best.

And no I am not bitter just sad that your team embody what is wrong with the way some teams approach this league.

Again that's not MY fault is it?

It's more entertaining on here than Eastenders lol

I have to agree with Hazel, the pool league is very serious and should only be played by quiet, sober individuals like the Secretary (and George) hic! Being drunk is now classed as cheating and a loss of frame foul as you are gaining an advantage by being able to see 2 cue balls. I have researched thoroughly the validity of this point and agree wholeheartedly that there is a slight advantage over mere mortals., however the advantage seems to diminish after 20 pints. So all teams will now be subject to random alcohol testing. Any player failing a test will be punished by necking 2 pints of non-alcohol beer yuk!

Anyway, back to the subject at hand

I'm getting fed up saying this - As long as a player plays their ball first, they can do what they like. There is no requirement to be playing a skill shot when playing their ball on to an opponents and potting it, the resulting foul is deemed punishment enough. You may not like it, but that's the rule.  As is per usual when this issue arises the offending player claims that they were attempting to play a skill shot when, in fact, they had no intention of doing so, therefore clouding the issue which leads to the arguments.

Unfortunately the term Deliberate Foul is used in the wrong context by players when quoting the rules. Whist Hazels shot was deliberate and resulted in a foul, it does not constitute a loss of frame foul as she played an "ON" ball first (the "ON" ball is her ball or another ball that she's legally intitled to play)

The second issue is a little more difficult to deal with, especially as it wasn't dealt with at the time "In another frame after giving their player multiple shots at their last ball and them not even trying to connect with it, admitting that it would not give them the advantage. After missing the ball by at least 1/4 table length, and complaining that it should be easy for our player to finish with two shots when they wouldn't try".

It is a loss of frame foul if a player makes no reasonable attempt to get out of a snooker, however there are so many variables; difficulty, playing with side, how many cushions involved, balls in proximity etc, that its hard to rule on this unless I can see the actual attempts.

In general, if its a straight up and down, then I'd expect a player to get to within 6 inches of their ball. This is where the Captain needs to get involved. If they feel that a player isn't making an reasonable attempt to get out of a snooker/snookers then they should raise the matter with the opposing Captain and if necessary give guidance to the referee/player involved. Whilst there's no specific referee guidance material on warning players you have to remember that we're not playing in the World Championships and the ability of refereeing can leave a lot to be desired, therefore commonsense needs to prevail. However, if a player openly admits (and there are witnesses) that they are not making an attempt to get out of a snooker due to the fact that it would not be to their advantage, then it would be deemed loss of frame.

That said and again I'm fed up saying it - if the Captains cannot agree a specific approach then they must immediately contact myself or another committee member who will advise on what course of action to take, once the specific situation has been conveyed to them. There is very little I/we can do if the frame/match continues.

Good Game Peachcroft - But Sorry This Argument Is All Because Of One Idiot

MR G BONNER!!!

As Captain of the Oracle i feel i have to say my point. As from the first minute of Mr Bonners arrival i knew Sunday night was gonna be a long one. I seriously think that idiot is only happy when complaining. Now i understand a team being unhappy when they lose a frame, but if you've been snookerd and you don't call a Total, and then hit the cue ball straight into the oppenents ball then rightly so you lose the frame, and too be honest i don't think anyone would of had a problem with it, until the "idiot of the year 2010" Mr G. Bonner decides to kick up a fuss. Now i do think it's sad writing all this about a Pool match but i on't think Hazel deserves the sticks she's getting!!! Also i was really peed off when Mr Bonner called my Team a bunch of cheats, as everyone would agree, although they may hate admitting it i have a team of talented Pool players, which goes for alot of the Pool players in the Abingdon League.

Now hopefully we can put an end to this debate, and understand that the night was only ruined because of one person, which is a shame. Now as for the rest of the Peachcroft team, you gave us a really good match and i wish you all the best for the rest of the season.

For the record, I was the referee in that frame and I didn't need Hazel to tell me Martin had commited a loss-of-frame foul, I know the rules perfectly well. He intentionally played into the opponents ball - there was no doubt in my mind about calling the frame there and then, I was just a bit shocked at how ridiculous the shot was to be honest- hence my delay.

And I play to win. I couldn't give a s**t if you enjoy yourselves or not.

At the end of the day the Oracle won and I sincerely wish them all the best in their future games. None of this is worth getting all heated about. I do agree on one thing that should be a mantra for any player....

If in doubt call Total Snooker. Even if it is not it covers your back and means the ref can give a verdict either way.

Ta ra till the next time biggrin

whats all this I see convincing the ref to award a decision he / she wasn't sure off - surely not....... if that isn't gamemanship I don't know what is !
