County Singles Championship

In case any county players have not seen the announcements elsewhere, the OCPF Singles Championship is due to take place next month.

Venue @ Rileys
Ladies & Youth - 15 Feb 2009 - 11.30am
Men - 22 Feb 2009 - 11.30am

Trophies available for winner (and runner-up I think...) and of course your name being etched into history on the permanent OCPF trophy.

Anyone who played for a team during the season can enter their respective championship. For example, youth or ladies can only enter the mens event should they have played for a mens team at some point during the season.

Any other questions - you can ask me (07977449174), your team manager, or anyone else on the committee.

Oh - and you need to be fully paid up on your subs to be allowed to enter!! evileye

But Youth who have played for the Mens at some point can still enter both Youth singles and Mens singles?

Yes, The Apprentice, this is exactly the case.

Any youth who also played for the mens at some stage of the season can enter BOTH the youth singles, and the mens.

Indeed we're hoping to see lots of the youth at the mens event! Show those old guys a thing or two confuse

A good turnout at Rileys yesterday for the Youth and Ladies championship. All but 2 of the youth squad, and over half the ladies squad were in attendence.

The youth final ended up being between an undefeated-all-day Jamie Saczak and team mate Andrew Gee. The first match was very close, and Jamie nearly ran away with it, but an in-off let Andrew back in and he fought his way into a deciding re-match.  Andrew Gee then deftly took out some strong clearances to snatch victory.

For the ladies there were somewhat fewer players on the day, but the standard of competition was still extremely high.  Two times defending champion Nicki Hoskins was this time in the final against Jaz Venning. Nicki had been beaten earlier in the day by Jaz, but Jaz was going to have to repeat this feat in order to take the title.  Nicki battled fiercely in the first match, winning 3-1, for the right to play a deciding match.  Jaz recovered some form though, and a potting-orientated approach was enough in the end to take Jaz Venning over the winning line 3-1.

Special mention to Shelly James who also put in a very impressive performance on the day.  Some extremely impressive potting - and a few notable victories to take away with her before eventually succumbing to Shelley White.

Very much looking forward to next weeks mens event and cheering on the guys!

Realised I never wrote anything up after the Mens County Championship event a couple of Sundays ago:

Would Matthew Challen retain his title for the third year running? Or would there be a new name on the men's trophy this year?

Kev McIlryoy
appeared to be the cat of nine lives on the day, getting to the final by winning all his games, to go on to face the winners of the losers half.  Matthew Challen was to triumph as top loser to face him once again.

Early in the day Kev narrowly avoided defeat to Ben Scott (who had him beat but fluffed his chance to take the match 3-1, and was eventually seen off by steady Kev) and also had a close shave against Matthew Challen, who missed a crucial shot (or was it an in-off?) in their deciding frame to let Kev win again.

Ben Scott battled well to make the latter stages, single handedly dispatching experience campaigner Malcom Lewis by knocking him out of both the winner and the losers half.  Ben eventually succumbed to John Kinsey in a pretty even match, both players looked to be flagging a little in the early frames, perhaps the long day beginning to take its toll, but the pace picked up and it was John who took the deciding frame. John made the final 3 with a further victory over Will, only to be taken out by Matty only one step away from the final.

Other notable perforamances were Tom Williams,  who won a number of games, before narrowly losing to Matty.  Eventually he was seen off by Will Cooper, who made the final 4 despite being knocked into the losers half in the first round by none other than Tom himself.  Rhys Freemire also put in a strong performance to almost knock out Matty in the very first round, but could not convert a 2-0 advantage to the win.

In the final Matty found himself needing to beat Kev twice in order to retain his title. The first match was a close fought battle, but Matty triumphed to leave him one match from victory.

The final match started with a long safety frame, and Kev seem to triumph as he got to the black.  There was some disruption from the crowd at this point, and Kev missed/went in off (can't remember).  This was the turning point of the match, and after Kev lost that long safety battle, Matty ran away with the match to claim his third successive victory in this event.

Perhaps we'll get a new name on the trophy next year...

Well done Matty. Again!!!!!!!!
