My county team has agreed to play the blackball lady county players, venue is the Oracle, Abingdon, date to be arranged. 4 sets, 2 sets blackball and 2 sets World rules. What do you say girls?
This has been an idea floating around for ages and I'd love to see it materialise. Happy to help engineer that, tho we prob need Nicki's input as county captain. Nicki???
Most of our players can play some world rules, though a couple wont so may need a bit of prompting with the rules.
Is your suggestion that each person will play 4 frames max? Coz I'd prefer best of 3's, but one-off frames is more like county actually is.
How many people? We could prob get at most 10 and worst say 5???
The calenders quite full until mid-April now, but lets try and get a date in the diary. There might be some new squad members from Mid march as well, and the county dates for April onwards aren't released yet, but we can probably guess what dates would be OK.
Yeah sorry about the late response to this, someone just told me there was some chat about it on the World rules county trials bit, but I didn't read that!
Yep that definitely sounds good. I have no free weekends between now and probably May to be honest, but the good thing about leaving it that long is that hopefully we will have a much larger squad after trials, and so should be able to field a larger team to match your side. If it was done before our trials (15th May) then we would at best be able to field 7 I'd have thought.
Our fixtures for next year should come out in March, is it OK for us to hold off organising a date til then? We don't want it to clash.
But other than that it sounds like a great idea, apart from I'm not very keen on the Oracle as a venue!!
And what happens if it's a draw after 4 legs?! Although I shouldn't think we'll let you get that many frames...
We can leave it a while, give us more time to sort out some dates but let's not forget about it this time. The manager of the Oracle has offered to host this event with free tables, which I know aren't the best but not the worst either. I and most of our team don't like Colours and the parking is expensive there plus as it's your home venue and our home venue is now in Witney I thought it would make a neutral venue, and you can park there for free or it's right next to bus stops for the pissheads. Or we could play it at Witney if you're prepared to travel, there is free parking there too but the drinks are expensive. £3.10 for a pint of Strongbow compared to £2.20 at the Oracle.
I was also thinking of running a singles comp alongside as we'll all be together for a change, maybe have a Blackball player versus a World Rules player in the first round and best of 5's? What do you think? I'm sure Jaz could help me run that so the captains can concentrate on the main match.
As for numbers, everyone I asked were up for this but as you know, there'll probably be a few last minute drop outs - some of our ladies have kids and that's the usual reason though they all manage on county days. At a rough guess I reckon 7 - 10 would come. 3 of our players are from Northampton and 2 of them were at county on Sunday and said they'd come and I'm sure the 3rd would come with them if they came.
As for rules Jaz, most of our players don't know Blackball Rules either so maybe a bit of leniency on both sides would not go amiss as we want it to be a fun day.
Sundays I can't make due to county or other commitments from April - September are:-
5th April, 19th April, 26th April, 10th May, 17th May, 24th May, 7th June, 29th June/5th July (possibly - depends if I'm asked to ref at World Championships), 12th July, 26th July, 9th August, 13th September, 20th September and 27th September.
I was thinking more Riley's than Colours, since it has free parking, is near a bus stop, has 3 for 2 on Strongbow (and other drinks!) making it less than £2 a pint, and the tables are very nice indeed, especially the three brand new ones! Maybe we should toss a coin for it or something if we can't agree...
Sounds like you're fairly busy, as am I, so let's hope there's a date we can both make! From the looks of it the beginning of May or mid June look best, but as I said, I won't know county dates til March so will have to wait til then.
As for a singles comp, it sounds like a great idea, I'm just worried it will all get a bit hectic with 4 legs of the team match going on as well, and players rushing between the two (plus reffing?).
Anyway, I'm sure we can sort out the finer details nearer the time.
Reckon we can club together to get some sort of annual trophy?
Singles comp sounds like fun to me - will add a bit more pool to a day otherwise filled with only 4 frames! More than happy to help Hazel sort this in and around the main team event. Of course I suppose it depends how many people we have out, coz if theres only 5 of us each then there wont be much time. In which case we could do it straight afterwards...
I'm happy with the Oracle, its nice to have a change of scene...
An annual trophy? We haven't even managed to organise the first one yet!! Perhaps we should think of that further down the track... like when we're organising the second one? Also I'm hoping the day will be mainly a fun event, and turning it into a fierce competition might stand in the way of that.
Why dont you get the mens teams involved as well and have one big Oxfordshire match, Then maybe do some fundraising for charity as well at same time, Also thats what I think should happen with the Town and Gown matches, Turn them into County v Gown matches make them bigger events and do some fundraising at the same time, Maybe for somewhere like Helen & Douglas House.
The only charity Town v Gown is likely to raise money for is help the aged! Ain't that right malc?
we have that already, it's called the Oxford Singles League......

If you want to organise this Steve then I can put you in touch with our mens teams captain/manager.

Hazel not involved with the OCPF any more, so not able to be involved in this process. But I see the OCPF chairman is looking in on this thread, so maybe he might be able to start organizing something from the OCPF side, as the county mangers are busy with Nationals and trials in the next few months. Such a event would benefit pool players from both codes and also making it a charity event, might mean getting sponsors and even local news paper coverage for the event, making it a big local event for the loads of pool players, Which surly could only benefit all sides.
I actually think this is a great idea, and think they should do a blackball mens V world rules mens A and B teams and womens teams agaist eachover.
I also thik that they should make it a yearly thing and the winnig team(s) should get a trophy for it and charge players a small fee of like £3 each so they can pay for the trophy(s), and hopefully it would become competitive like oxford V cambridge in the university rugby. Think it would be quality (well as long as i played in one of the teams lol!, guarentee someone will say "yeah you will in the womens hahah so funy").
Great in reality but with 16 fixtures in B/C divisions, possible 12 in men's A next year and 14 in ladies for blackball, not to mention the World Rules fixtures I can't see a date being sorted.
