2009 Abingdon Pool League - Annual General Meeting
The period for Nominations for the Committee Positions and Proposals for the AGM to be received has now past and a number of proposals have been received re "the league format".
NO FURTHER PROPOSALS WILL BE CONSIDERED
REMEMBER, it's your League and it's your responsibility to attend the AGM and vote for or against any changes. Don't bitch at me afterwards if 5 people decide to change things that are not to your liking.
The proposals are as follows;
(Winter League 2009/10 & Summer League 2010)
PROPOSAL - to change to the start time of match's from 7.30pm back to 8pm start.
(In our experience most weeks we don't tend to start at 7.30pm. We have had many occasions were we or other teams haven't had players at the venue ready to start at 7.30pm.)
(Winter League 2009/10)
PROPOSAL - to change the format of the Winter League games from 12 singles (2 sessions of 6) to 6 singles and 3 doubles, 1 point given for each frame won
PROPOSAL - to change the format of the Winter League games from 12 singles (2 sessions of 6) to 6 singles and 4 doubles, 1 point given for each frame won (same two players can't play twice), 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw
PROPOSAL - to change the format of the Winter League games from 12 singles (2 sessions of 6) to 15 singles (3 sessions of 5)
PROPOSAL - to change the format of the Winter League games from 12 singles (2 sessions of 6) to 12 singles (2 sessions of 6) and 3 scotch doubles
PROPOSAL - New 2-Person Knockout Competition
(Summer League 2010)
PROPOSAL - to change to the current way the Knockout stages work - Eliminate home advantage & play the K/O stages at neutral venues. This could be decided by The top 4 teams to finish in the Summer Cup / Shield league would be the venues for the quarters & semi final stages. (but not allowing any team to be drawn at their own venue).
PROPOSAL - to change to the current way the Group Stages are drawn - Groups to be drawn based on preceding Winter League standings
A couple of the proposers have ask me to comment on their proposals so that they may alter/withdraw them prior to the AGM
(none of the following is binding and is only to clarify previous AGM decisions on the subject)
PROPOSAL - to change to the start time of match's from 7.30pm back to 8pm start.
(In our experience most weeks we don't tend to start at 7.30pm. We have had many occasions were we or other teams haven't had players at the venue ready to start at 7.30pm.)
The original decision to move the start time to 7.30pm (actual match start time is 7.45pm, 7.30pm is if the away team want a knock-up) was based on the old pub closing time of 10.30pm as some matches were going beyond this time. Whilst a few pubs open until 11-12pm, the majority still close at 10.30pm so any decision to change the start time needs to be considered in conjunction with the playing format/number of frames of matches. Moving the start time to 8pm would possibly only lead to teams turning up 8.15-8.30pm. League Rules do allow for teams to claim frames off late arriving teams. Whilst this is not desirable, it doesn't help when the HOME captain hasn't even bothered to sort the card/table money/their own team out by the start time or allowing late teams a knock-up.
(Winter League 2009/10)
PROPOSAL - to change the format of the Winter League games from 12 singles (2 sessions of 6) to 6 singles and 3 doubles, 1 point given for each frame won

Doubles was voted out off the league due to them being ridiculously slow with some players conferring with each other for up to 5 mins between visits. It will no doubt be suggested that there could be a ban on players conferring, to do this makes the point of having doubles "pointless".
To give teams 1 point per frames won, could see a team winning every match yet not win their section due to poorer results from the other teams in their section.
A compromise could be the -15 singles (3 sessions of 5) - proposal were a point could be awarded for each "session" won.
PROPOSAL - New 2-Person Knockout Competition
Currently there is no room for another competition unless we go back to playing on Bank Holiday weekends
(Summer League 2010)

This could be decided by The top 4 teams to finish in the Summer Cup / Shield league would be the venues for the quarters & semi final stages. (but not allowing any team to be drawn at their own venue).
Sorting out neutral venues is a nightmare as some pubs will pay for the table, some won't and could involve 2 teams travelling a distance instead of 1, The reason behind the current automatic draw was to even things up for lower teams to get some advantage over the bigger teams (only 1st (9th) & 2nd (10th) always play away). It could be changed to allow them the Home advantage in the draw.
Please feel free to comment on any of the proposals prior to the AGM

Not going to be playing winter league next year, but I'm going to add my opinion as if I were going to play. (Kev, don't tell me my opinion isn't wanted because I know you want to come back with some witty reply).
I would vote for 15 singles, 3 sessions of 5. Players will be able to play more frames. A squad with 7/8 players will be able to give each player at least 2 frames, which makes the night a bit more worth it.
Not to sure about the point per session won. The league would be so close all the way through the season. A team could could win each session 3-2 giving an overall score of 9-6. They would score 3 points, yet a match having sessions 5-0, 2-3, 2-3, would see a 9-6 win for the home team, but they would only get one point with the away team getting two. I think 3 sessions of 5 with a point per frame would be good as a team will be rewarded for having a bigger victory. A team winning each session 5-0 would not recieve any more points than a team that scrape each session 3-2.
I won't be at the AGM as I'm in France, so I guess you'll be relieved that I'm not going to be at the singles Kev. I'll hopefully play summer league next season and I'm quite happy with the way it's ran at the moment.
Interestingly, you knew the draw months ago but only booked your trip 2 weeks ago, seems you knew the outcome if you played me, which is understandable
Perhaps the Midget could have a match of 5-0, 2-3, 2-3 (9-6) but unlikely for most matches. Also a team losing the 1st session 5-0 (and maybe the 2nd 5-0) wouldn't be disheartened as they still have something to play for in the remaining session(s)
The only problem with 1pt per frame is that a team could win every match and still not win their section with another team losing a couple of matches but winning 13-2/14-1 in other matches allowing them to overhaul the unbeaten team. Though it could be argued that as the standard of most Sections is relatively similar this shouldn't happen

I hope to be at the AGM but not sure yet so will let you have my views.
With regard to the start time, it appears that all proposals to the match format could potentially make the matches longer, therefore the idea of delaying the start doesn't really make sense to me.
I personally also like the 3 sets of 5 matches and quite like the point per set. I understand what Joe is saying, but I'm sure rack difference would be used to differentiate teams on the same points so there would always be something to play for. This format should make the season more competative for longer. I think the greatest benefit to this proposal is that it is very flexible allowing bigger teams to rotate their players giving 2 racks each and smaller teams of 5 to compete equally. This should therefore appeal to the teams in every league!
With regard to the summer league I agree with the change of format, teams ranked 1 and 2 should have the benefit of home draws throughout the knock out stage. For example the boundary house played Wotton on Sunday and although we did lose (and didn't throw it) we were better to do so as if we had of won we could have sneaked into the top 4 and had an away game, but as we lost we now have a home game. I don't think a league should ever be set so losing has an advantage.
I plain and simply decline your proposal Colzy. Thanks for the offer though.
Oh and about the match start time. There is no point moving start time back to 8 as games will then just start at 830 instead of 8 like they do at moment. If start time is 730, people turn up for 730 and games start at 8, move it back then actual start time wil just go back aswell.
Kev, I can beat you any day of the week, but could only go on holiday then I'm afraid. Anyway, I couldn't allow myself to knock you out of the singles because that would be the summer cup and the singles you did **** in.

Sorry, forgot you're still in short trousers and haven't been taught CAPITAL letters yet
Still we can have a wee wager with your paper round money if you're so confident

I got laid off because of the credit crunch so I no longer have my paper round. I would of had a £2 bet with you if I was still in employment but I'm afraid I cannot afford it in these tight times.
