Having organised and captained some EPA World Rules events lately, I have had a lot of positive feedback from players that they want a World Rules league in Abingdon. They can see that World Rules players are of a higher standard and they want to improve. So I'm going to start a new league on Tuesday nights with 7 players per team all playing 2 frames each. This is the standard format for the Champion of Champions event which our Abingdon team sadly lost in tonight after being 3-1 up then losing 8 - 3 against a strong Bicester team. All surrounding leagues in Oxfordshire now play World Rules as it's the way forward. There are loads of competitions in World Rules which some of you have heard of, ie: Interleague, Champion of Champions, The Golden Cue, Minehead, plus many tours, World Masters, World Championships (which have recently been on Sky TV) but there's hardly any competitions for Blackball players. You only have to see the EPA calender to see there's something on nearly weekend. http://www.epa.org.uk/comps.php To start a new league though I'd need £200 - £300 in sponsorship to cover the cost of perpetual trophies. The entry fee which will be £25 - £30 per team will cover the cost of league champions trophies, team knockout winners trophies and singles knockout trophies, so if anyone works for a big company or knows anyone who could sponsor the league, please let me know. I'd need a minimum of 8 teams to get started but I'm sure there will be more teams wanting to play and depending on entries there could be more than one division.
Please post your interest on here and PM me if you have a potential sponsor.
Hey wench, the name Abingdon & Dirtrict Pool League is a registered name, any unauthorised use of it may find you sued....
and, i'd rather you didn't peddle your self-interest garbage on here unless of course you are fair in what you state..
EPA has been going longer than Blackball, it's reasonable to expect it to have more competitions, but lets breakdown what you've said.

Blinkered view IMO, as most of these players have only played Interleague and/or a little bit of EPA County and very little Blackball outside of Abingdon/Oxford, they can hardly form a balanced view on the standard of players. Their "standard of play" will improve by playing better players of whichever rules and as you completely ignore, the top players in Oxforshire play in both World and Blackball events...
All surrounding leagues in Oxfordshire now play World Rules as it's the way forward.
Never knew they were so enlightened, perhaps in the country they're able to resist being influenced by the dark art of Blackball, no doubt the inbreeding helps too.....
and if it's the way forward, why does the EPA ban players who play in events other than their own? what do they fear?
Furthermore Blackball is part of the World Pool Association who run most Pool events Worldwide including all American Pool disciplines and is recognized by the IOC

Get those blinkers off Hazel; The "World" Championships of both EPA & Blackball are a joke with such powerhouses of pool as Uganda, Malta, Jersey, Shetland Isles etc taking part. Not that i've anything against them, but to call a competition the "World Championship" with about 14 countries represented is stretching it a bit. Not quite as bad as the yanks calling that rounders competition the "World Series" when only they take part, but close
Most "tours" are privately run and whilst there are currently more World Rules one's, Blackball one's are starting to run.
Of course you fail to mention the longest run pool competition BAPTO, at which you've won the Ladies Singles(not like you to not mention this)is played to Blackball Rules, of course that would require you to remove your blinkers.
People like you are the reason 8 ball pool will never be a success in the wider world as you can't see beyond the end of your nose. The truth is that most players can enter tournaments, leagues etc playing whatever rules and that the standard of player has nothing to do with what rules they play, but more to do with their own ability and the ability of the players they play. which is how you learn. Good players are good players and as has been continually shown can adapt to whatever rules a tournament is run to. The case you make regarding "tours" etc is a red herring as the vast majority of players don't have the ability or more importantly the time/money to go travelling around the country playing in all these tournaments.
Finally, should you get the league off the ground. i have excel stuff that may help you to automate most of the weekly grind

H! what all this world rule sh1t doing in my oxford "BLACKBALL" Tuesday thread?
I'm not getting into all the World rules v Blackball saga but prefer Blackball myself.
You might want to change your nights as Kidlington & District also play on a Tuesday night playing world rules, I use to playing in the league myself many years ago before to changed to over to World Rules, hence I started playing in the Mile League . It seems to be mainly Bicester & Kidlington team?
To start a new league though I'd need £200 - £300 in sponsorship to cover the cost of perpetual trophies. so if anyone works for a big company or knows anyone who could sponsor the league, please let me know.
Good luck with the sponsorship, remember their a credit crunch on
It's not self interest either, it's in the interest of ALL pool players.

I'm not the blinkered one, I've been around too long. It's the Abingdon/Oxford players who have been blinkered.

My point exactly !

They don't ban players who play in "events" other than their own. Just if it's in a rival county/International team which is fair enough I think as the EPA have been around a lot longer than the EUK&PF.

And the EPA are part of the World Eightball Pool Federation, recognised by Sport England as the governing body for pool in England. Remind me, when and on what channel are the Blackball World Championships shown on TV?

But at least EPA get countries like South Africa and Australia actually making the journey over here.

Exactly, just starting. The EPA ladies tour has been going for many years and has always had nearly 60 players on it, though the last couple of years it's been full with 64 players including the undoubtly best player in the World, Sue Thompson (who I nearly beat at the last event btw). How many ladies on the Blackball tour? 20 plus I believe and I doubt most of them would bother entering if Sue played on them.

Now it's played to Blackball rules. However, the 2 times I won it it was ran by the EPA and they paid my travel/accomodation to go to Europe for the Europeans.

What crap, 8 ball pool has been and is a success and it's because of people like me (and you) who put time and effort into organising and running events.
LONG LIVE POOL.

Nothing to do with rules Moo, I like both sets of rules. But if I get a World Rules league started in Abingdon it'd be on Tuesday nights and the forum says "Tuesday Night Pool League".
PoolQueen wrote:Fair enough, I said Abingdon and District not Abingdon and Dirtrict though I wouldn't actually call it that.
perhaps Abingdon with Deliberate Foul League
It's not self interest either, it's in the interest of ALL pool players.
you meant to say "it's in the interest of Ms Dabrowski
very little Blackball outside of Abingdon/Oxford

perhaps you missed your vocation as a journalist seeing as you've DELIBERATELY mis-quoted me. That word seems to crop up alot in World Rules They don't ban players who play in "events" other than their own. Just if it's in a rival county/International team which is fair enough I think as the EPA have been around a lot longer than the EUK&PF.
Oh I see, it's the "It's my ball and I want to play in goal or i'll take my ball home" mentality. Being the 1st doen't mean best
And the EPA are part of the World Eightball Pool Federation, recognised by Sport England as the governing body for pool in England.
Hazel, I do believe that the International Olympic Committee are just a tad higher up the greasy pole than Sport England
But at least EPA get countries like South Africa and Australia actually making the journey over here.
Oh goodie gum drops...
I do believe that the WPA hold their World Championships in different countries, therefore requiring ALL participants to travel year on year and Team India aren't made up of 11 blokes from Bradford or Team Australia; 11 on their gap year.

See, you just can't help yourself in being arrogant.. How can you speak on behalf of people you don't know. I'm sure that most of the Blackball Ladies would love the oportunity to play against the likes of Sue and Emma Cunningham. And again, Sue was the top women when playing Fed Rules which goes to prove my point that a good player is a good player, regardless of rules
Now it's played to Blackball rules. However, the 2 times I won it it was ran by the EPA Wonder why that changed. pehaps the Pool table Operators didn't want to be associated with the EPA?
8 ball pool has been and is a success and it's because of people like me (and you) who put time and effort into organising and running events.
Wake up Hazel, at higher levels the administrators are only interested in lining their own pockets. Individuals dont gripe about paying £30 or so over the odds but multiply that by 1000 and someone's on a nice little earner. Lets face it, the World Champion gets £10,000, no doubt more than they got 15 years ago, but over the same period the Darts World Champion's winnings have risen from £16,000 to £125,000 and the 2010 champion will get £200,000, now thats progress...
I'm not knocking pool in general but the game's run by self-interested robbin' b'stards who've done bugger all to advance the game to new heights and will continue to do so whilst the current lot are in charge. The EPA are more guilty than anyone else seeing as they've been around since time began and whilst you rose tinted glasses wearing members of the EPA continue to walk pass Specsavers, it will continue...

Jamie, I am absolutely disgusted by this quote from you. How dare you say this when you know I've helped you and many others in the past. All I'm interested in is trying to help promote pool.
And Kevin, how can you say I'm doing this just for my own interest? You know how much work is involved in running a pool league and I was prepared to take it on.
Stuff you all, if this is how you get treated after all the work I've done in the past then no wonder people don't bother. A thankless task.
Sorry Hazel but you are beginning to sound like a broken record, "Wolrd rules this"...."World rules that"...."World rules have better players"
If you really think this, go and play World Rules and stop playing Blackball altogether.
This is a blackball forum.
I agree with Kevin. You are only doing this for your own interest.
It is also annoying when you wear one of your World rules t-shirts to a Blackball league match. Thats like a Blackpool fan sitting in the Preston end whilst wearing his Blackpool shirt (or for those of you who arent familiar with the Championship, its like a Man City fan sitting in the Man Utd end with his Man City shirt on!!)
