I just thought that this might be of interest to some of you out there. As over the seasons/years I have kept records of "MOST" of the singles winners in the Oxford Pool Leagues. I am still missing a few winners over the years, (which who knows this forum might be able to help fill in the gaps)
So please feel free to have a guess or comment on a couple of questions I throw at you. like how many different players have won a OXFORD singles title over the 27 years since the first one was held in the 1981/82 "Thursday" season when Ron ONeill (Crown - Stadhampton) beat a very young must have been only 4yrs old Malcolm Lewis (Crown - Stadhampton) 4-0 in the presence of the recently deceased Leo the hat McMakin at the posh hotel The Tree Inn in Iffley.

The next part of this history of the Oxford Pool League Singles competitions, is joining the 14 one time winners is anther 6 people that have won an Oxford Pool League SINGLES TITLEon 2 occasions, with 4 of them winning the SAME league title twice, and the other 2 (Brain Carroll & Jimmy Millar) winning 2 different league singles titles.
Its interesting to see the gap between Ron ONeill winning the first ever singles back in 1981/82, then regaining it 13 years later in the 1994/95 season.

Well what can I say about these 2 guys other than simply legends in Oxfordshire let alone Oxford POOL. (did you guess them ?)
1.Martyn Edwards certainly my greatest rival over the years, and weve had quite a few battles throughout the 80s and 90s, as you can well imagine, sadly retired from the game back in 1996.
2.Paul Chambers great mate, drinking buddy, and YET AGAIN coming back to play at the Osney Arms a week next season with me and the rest of the team.
Paul has to be one of the most consistent players over recent years, and as with Martyn both could and should have won more titles, if it wasnt for a certain person pippin them in finals over the long period of time.
So:
MARTYN EDWARDS WON: ++++
1986/87 Martyn Edwards (Magdalen Arms)
1987/87 Martyn Edwards (??????????????)
1990 Martyn Edwards (??????????????)
1992 Martyn Edwards (Osney Arms)
1995 Martyn Edwards (County Snooker Club)
PAUL CHAMBERS WON: ++++
1997/98 Paul Chambers (Osney Arms)
1998/99 Paul Chambers (Osney Arms)
2000 Paul Chambers (Tandem-Kennington)
2002/03 Paul Chambers (Osney Arms)
2003 Paul Chambers (Osney Arms)
Next and last IS me, (if you hadnt already guessed ) but Im sure nobody is in the slightest bit interested in what let alone how many titles Ive won, but I can tell you that it is MORE than 5Oxford Pool League SINGLES TITLES.
Anyway I hope this was of some interest to some of you out there and thank you if you did take the time to read it.

I remember playing Martyn in the 1995 sinlges final at County Snooker Club, didn't know he had home table advantage at the time but might explain his frequent inch perfect safety play.
Played 7 frames technically but losing 4 - 0 I have never seen anyone since Martyn (not even Kevin) that was so good at salvaging a lost cause and turning it into a re rack as he did that night.
It was the old 2 shots carry at the time.....

Not sure how it would stand but i think the year was 1993 and i reached the Thursday singles Final and was due to play Tony Smith (Osney) in the Final, it was Kelvin Woodwards last year running the league and i suppose he could not be bothered to arrange the Final after running the league superbly for many years beforehand and only matched recently by Kevin 'Sammy' McIlroy & JFK, but anyway would would that non-played Final be classed as a shared title? I know the trophy that you took home for a year if you won it, was 'stolen' by 'Lucky' & 'Fudger' and they awarded it to themselves for winning the Doubles title either that year or after, as in a previous post 'Lucky' stated last time he saw it Fudger was doing something in it!
